Yoga Nidra means psychic sleep. It is a state of consciousness where one is on the borderline between sleep and wakefulness. A guided meditation practice is recommended in the initial stages of the practice.
During the practice of Yoga Nidra the physical centers of the body become introverted (Pratyahara). When the mind is concentrated on the center, the energy is drawn to it, and this causes withdrawal of the senses at that center. In the deep state of relaxation that results from the practice, tension is released, and the mind becomes clear, the thoughts become more powerful. In psychic sleep we tap directly into our inner personality and transform our habits and beliefs on a core level. It is a method of going within, and has been used by yogis since the dawn of time to bring them face to face with the inner true self.
A resolve or Sankalpa is made during the practice. Sankalpa is a short and simple positive statement, repeated with genuine conviction, that will be embedded in the subconscious mind. In the state of Yoga Nidra passivity this kind of resolve is very powerful and transformative, it can literally change a person’s whole life.
These resolutions will certainly come true with regular practice. It is best if Sankalpas have a spiritual objective, for example, ‘‘I am ascending to the higher state of being day by day”. It is also important to repeat Sankalpa several times during the practice of Yoga Nidra. One can reflect on their Sankalpa immediately after Yoga Nidra, before opening their eyes.
It is advised to practice Yoga Nidra while lying down with the head flat on the floor in Savasana.
